Clive graduated with a Masters in Civil Engineering from Southampton University & an Engineering Diploma from Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chausees in 1985, joining Shell International in the same year as a Petroleum Operations Engineer. After an initial training period, he completed a number of assignments as a Drilling Engineer in Europe, UKCS, West Africa & India before joining Enterprise Oil in 1993. After a short period in London, he went on to run offshore operations in Cambodia and Indonesia, before progressing to team leader roles in Houston and Aberdeen. Thereafter, he became Drilling Manager, initially in Aberdeen and latterly Dubai.
Clive was one of the three founding shareholders of SPD Limited, a leading well engineering project management company, and was the Managing Director from its start up in Dubai in September 2002. Business expanded rapidly in the Middle East and soon included several projects throughout the Far East. International expansion of SPD resulted in Clive relocating to Aberdeen in 2005 to build the UK, Europe & Africa business. He has been involved with projects in over 50 countries with over 70 different international clients, including National Oil Companies, Major International Oil Companies, Independent Oil Companies and Oil & Gas Service Companies. Clive was instrumental in negotiating the acquisition of SPD by Petrofac in January 2007. Latterly, he filled the role of Group Business Development Director, charged with developing the company strategy for continued growth, with particular focus on acquisitions and international expansion. In his time with SPD, Clive grew the company from a team of three to a company of over 200 employees with a turnover in excess of $50 million. Clive joined LanyonSmith Limited in January 2012 to provide expertise to clients requiring advice on how to set up its energy services business particularly in international environments. He continues to provide well engineering consultancy to the oil & gas industry.
Karen Lanyon – Medical Director
Having graduated with an honours degree in Medicine from Birmingham University in 1986, Karen completed her general practice training in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1990. In 1991 she worked as a medic in Chile with Operation Raleigh for three months and then spent a year travelling throughout South and Central America.
Karen has lived and worked in several international locations, including Jakarta, Houston & Dubai and has travelled extensively through Europe, the Middle East, Australasia and the Americas. Her international medical experience includes working as a researcher in tropical diseases in Indonesia, which involved running a cholera investigation in West Timor. She also worked as a General Practitioner (GP) in Dubai for 3 years. Karen has lived in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland, since 1995 and works as a GP at Insch Health Centre, in between international excursions. In 2005 she started work as a GP with Special Interest (GPSI) in Epilepsy at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. She runs 5 clinics a month, assessing patients with possible first seizures and reviewing patients with a diagnosis of Epilepsy. Additionally, she continues to work part-time as a GP at Insch Health Centre. In her “spare time”, when she is not running her four children around, Karen organises the village wine tasting club, book club and youth club.
Karen joined LanyonSmith Limited in April 2011 to provide her medical expertise to the local health community. She is looking to provide her expertise to clients requiring medical advice on setting up in a new international location.
